     惊悉荆其诚教授去世,我们西南大学同仁感到非常悲痛。荆先生是我国杰出的心理学家,也是我们西南大学的客座教授,他的逝世是我国心理学界的重大损失,也是我们西南大学的重大损失。我们一定化悲痛为力量,继续发扬勤奋、严谨、创新、求实的学风,把我校的心理学事业建设好,为祖国争光。

     上联:修道修教开民智六十载沧海桑田;
     下联:立心立命继绝学三十年泰山北斗。
     注:《中庸》中有“率性之谓道,修道之谓教"之语;北宋哲学家张载有“为天地立心,为生民立命,为往圣继绝学,为万世开太平”之语。通过先生们的努力,今日的心理学已经不能和过去同日而语。先生本人的人品和学问是学界的典范。

I was deeply saddened to hear about the death of Internationally Distinguished Professor Jing Qi-Cheng. I know how difficult this must be for our psychologists and his family in China. As one of his students, I took a psychology course which he taught in English in 1986. That was my first English-taught psychology course I had at Beijing Normal University and in Chinese Academy of Science in China. He was an excellent teacher, mentor, researcher, administrator, and social activist. He was a great role model for us indeed. He passed away, and his psychological and social legacy stays with us forever. Below is my Chinese poem in memory of Distinguished Professor Jing:

I am very sad to hear the sudden passing of Prof. Jing. It was a huge loss for the field of psychology, both in China and around the world, a loss for Prof. Wang and family, and a loss of a mentor and friend to me personally. Prof. Jing supervised my Masters of Psychology thesis at the Institute of Psychology. He continued to provide his wisdom and support when I was studying at the University of Michigan and teaching at Indiana University. Along with his close friend and colleague Prof. Houcan Zhang, they opened the "Chinese Psychology" door to the world. He symbolized the new generation of psychologists in China. He elevated the psychological science in China to a higher level. Much more importantly to me, he was a great mentor, a father figure, and a dear friend. I am forever indebted to Prof. Jing. His legacy will live on in eternity.

Thank you so much for letting me know about the sad and sudden death of Professor Jing Qicheng. As a tribute to him, which I should like to record here with your help, one can only say that the minute on meeting him one got the immediate feeling of not only meeting an outstanding Psychologist but an exceptionally warm human being, making one to feel that one has already known him for years. I can remember being introduced to him for the first time by Jimmy Chan almost half a century ago,and found on that occasion, and several ones since, that one could discuss with him with pleasure not only various aspects of Psychology (including criminological applications) but any other topical subject of the day, and note his wide grasp and interest in the way the world around us was shaping. The only consoling factor about his sad passing is that one must envy him the way he died so unexpectedly in the middle of a long career which for him was only a part of a long and famous life, and our heartfelt sympathy at this moment, also of my wife Ann, goes out to his wife and family , colleagues and firiends. Regretfully we will not be able to attend his funeral since still tied up temporarily in England, Spain, and Sydney but our thoughts will be with him then in Hong Kong and mainland China.

My warmest condolences to the family of Professor Jing!

It is indeed sad to hear the bad news that Professor Jing Qicheng has passed away. I still remember the scenes vividly with him at the last international psychologists congress in Beijing four years ago in 2004 though I have known him for a long time in Hong Kong, Beijing, and other cities at various meetings and conferences and particularly well since I was President of the Hong Kong Psychological Society in the year 19 93 - 1994. His work and devotion to psychology in China and indeed worldwide has been tremendous, and no doubt he will be well remembered by his colleagues and friends all over the world. I know his wife Duan Huang also. In the meantime, my wife and I would express our sincere condolences to his family. Our spirit will be with them at the funeral services day after tomorrow on Wednesday, October 8, 2008, though we are unable to attend. I have to say that I feel very proud to be associated with him during his lifetime.

Dear Professor Wang, dear Family of Professor Jing:
It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of our highly esteemed colleague, Professor Jing. On behalf of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS) and all its representatives, I want to convey our heartfelt condolences to you.
Professor Jing was a tremendously creative and influential psychological researcher and was a mentor for many of the younger generation. His dedication to science as a means to increase our knowledge about human behaviour and to improve the life of human beings was exceptional. Always interested in new insights, he communicated with scientists around the world and impressed us all tremendously with the humanistic orientation and philosophical foundation of his thinking.
I met Professor Jing for the first time in the early 1980s in China, and without any exaggeration I can say that he was the key to my beginning to understand societal and scientific development in China. Ever since this meeting, which is almost 30 years ago now, I was impressed by his wisdom and willingness to further international cooperation, especially through the establishment of close relations with the younger generation of Chinese psychologists. His support in this regard will be sorely missed. The fact that China plays such a strong role in IUPsyS is owed to his early inspiration.
Once again, may I say how much we will all feel the loss of such a great scientist, and that our deepest sympathies go out to you at this difficult time. The Union will keep his memory in the highest regard.

Rainer K. Silbereisen
President,International Union of Psychological Science

I deeply regret the passing away of Dr. Jing. He did a great work for having your country in the international psychological arena. My condoleances to your scientific community.

I am very sad hearing this news. He was a perfect host during my visits in China in 1987 and 1988. He was also exactly my age. We are so vulnerable.

——————Harry Triandis

I feel a deep personal loss. We first met in 1979, and maintained a warm friendshp for almost three decades. I can only imagine the loss felt by his family, his colleagues at the Institute, and those feelings are shared by thousands of psychologists not only in China, but throughout the international psychology community.
I cannot think of any psychologist who has been as pivotal in development of psychology in his own country as Professor Jing, and he made important contributions to international psychology as well. His passing will be mourned, but his impact will be lasting.

What a terrible loss. At lunch in april he looked hale and hearty; he even rode his bicycle to the restaurant! his death comes as a great surprise to all of us. please share my condolences with his family and colleagues.

I am very sorry to hear these news. I have gotten to know Professor Jing as an enormously generous and knowledgeable professor. I hear these news while I am in Asia and I know how much Chinese psychology owes to Professor Jing.

To Professor Jing Qicheng in Deep Friendship
Kurt and Denise Pawlik
I am deeply saddened by the death of Professor Jing. I have lost in him a great colleague and marvellous friend. I feel honored to express my deep respect of thim as a scientist and may condolences to his wife Professor Wang and his family. I had the privilege to know and work with Professor Jing for close to thirty years, in research and publications, in many conferences and in international exchange. In this long-lasting cooperation his wisdom and clarity of thinking always impressed me and the deep friendship with him became most dear to me.
Professor Jing Qicheng's lasting contributions in research, to the development of psychological science and of international cooperation in psychology award him a place of honor in the world history of psychology. His key role in the development of psychology in China over the last thirty years was unique in far-sightedness and success. This development has become widely recognized in its model status. He received many awards of honor, among them the election to the Vice-Presidency of the International Union of Psychological Science and the membership in the Third-World Academy of Sciences. The psychological world has lost in Professor Jing one of its outstanding representatives. His life achievement and scientific heritage will keep his name unforgettable.

Indeed -- those of us who knew him in his first trip to U of M in 1979 were astonished at the time at his extraordinary knowledge of our cultural practices (both daily life and academic, including nuanced understanding of colloquisms). It wasn't just language, though he was schooled in English as a young child and was certainly fluent in every sense; but it was much more than that. And then he was the critical bridge for so many U.S. psychologists, U of M and many others, in connecting with China long before its opening up to its now quite cosmopolitan academic world. He was simply a truly amazing person.

Q.C. Jing was one of the world's most eminent psychologists and hosted the last International Congress of Psychology.
Professor Jing was the first psychologist to be allowed to leave Peking after the gang of four period and came to Michigan. By the end of his year here he knew more about Ameerican psychology than we did.

——————Bill McKeachie

This is truly sad news. Professor Jing was an important psychologist who played a crucial role in establishing links between psychologists in China and the U.S. Because of his visit to the U.S. in 1979 many Michigan psychologists were able to set up collaborative research arrangements years before those would have occurred in the normal course of events. Many important research projects were carried out through his help and intervention, which I suspect he was uniquely able to provide.I believe that everyone who knew Jing at felt privileged to do so. In addition to being brilliant he was an extraordinarily kind, decent and wise human being.

——————Richard E. Nisbett

Professor Jing was the first Chinese psychologist to be able to visit the US after the cultural revolution and he came to Michigan for an entire year after addressing the APA in 1979. He developed a close friendship with Harold Stevenson and many others here. In addition, the Jing-Stevenson collaboration facilitated many international collaborations, students, and many people's careers. I, personally, have both of them to thank for being able to focus my research on China and I know that many other people's research and lives would not have been the same were it not for their guiding hands and sage advice.

——————Twila Tardif

I find the news of Prof.Jing very sad.He was often our guest when in Ann Arbor for his first visit and was very kind to us when I was at the Institute in China. He was a heavy smoker and one evening at our home he expressed the view that the US was spreading rumors here about cancer from smoking to have exploit the Asia markets. How that worked I couldn't understand but anything is possible.

It was with great sadness that I received today the notice that Professor Jing is dead. Professor Jing and I served many years together in the Executive Committee of the International Union of Psychological Science and we were both vice-presidents of the union at the same time. It was always a pleasure to work together with Professor Jing. In connection with trips to Beijing, Professor Jing and I became good personal friends. I was invited to his home once and I very much enjoyed meeting with his wife and son at this occasion. Professor Jing visited me and my family once in our home in Stockholm.
The deepest condolences from me and my wife Gun.

——————Lars Nilsson

We too are shocked and wish we could be with you. Please let us know how we can offer our deep sentiments of admiration, affection and sorrow. It is hard for me to ponder the idea that Jing will not be present to welcome me when I next am in China.
Please let Jing's wife and family know how much we wish we could be with you in this time of grief.
I do wish that I had been in Beijing this past week. it is hard for me to put in words how much I will miss Jing, so grand a mind, so talented a scientist, so wonderful a teacher to me about China, and a truly close friend. The word irreplaceable is indeed called for at this time.
     Our deepest affection.

——————Denise Park

With great sadness I heard this startling news that Prof. Jing passed away. I hoped to meet him in Beijing during the Conference. His death is an extraordinary loss for all psychologists. It was him who helped to develop psychology in China after years of darkness with his deep personal engagement. I will not forget his openminded kindliness and widespred knowledge.
Please express my condolences to Prof. Jings family.
   With warm regards

I just heard about Jing's death over the weekend. I send my deep condolences. His death is a loss for chinese psychology and the Institute of course, but I know he was a very important figure in your life as well--past and present.
My sympathies to you and your colleagues.

——————Henry M. Wellman

I am saddened by the news of the passing of Professor Jing Qicheng, a long long-time colleague, friend and respected leader of psychology on a national and international scale. Professor Jing made impressive contribution to the development of new psychology in China since the late seventies, and he offered major leadership in promoting and integrating psychological research and technology between the Mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan. We worked together on many occasions at the IUPS as well as the IAAP congresses spanning a period of 16 years on issues surrounding the subject of psychology and national development in the developing countries. I have fond memories of Prof. Jing’s warmth, wisdom and friendship since I first met in 1980, over a quarter of a century ago, when Hong Kong psychologist made their first contact with psychology in the Mainland.
I send my condolences to the families of Professor Jing and the members of the Institute of Psychology.

——————Henry S. R. Kao

I was deeply shocked by the sudden death of Professor Quicheng Jing. My wife and I send our deepest sympathy to you all.
It is a great loss of not only Chinese psychology, but also international psychological community. He greatly contributed the development of Chinese psychology, especially its internationalization. The great success of the 2004 International Congress of Psychology in Beijing should be largely due to him.
I also deeply appreciate him in development of intimate friendships between China and Japan through psychology and personal friendships between him and us nearly 30 years since Leipzig International Congress of Psychology.

——————Tadasu Oyama

At the telephone from Dr. Zhang Rishen about the sudden passing away of Professor Jing, a world reknowned psycologist, a long time leader and navigator of Asian psychology, and a sympathetic friend of many Japanese psychologists, I do not know how to express my deep sorrow.
My friendship with Professor Jing has continued for close to 30 years since we have worked together as board members of International Union of Psychological Science. As only represemtatives from Asia, we shared opinions and positions at many issues. His brightness, maturity and far- sightedness was a good guide for me and attracted respect and friendship of all deligates. He has visited Japan a number of times, gave lectures and talks at our conventions and meetings impressing Japanese psychologists with his scholarship and friendxhip.
I am sure that his path will lead Chinese, Japanese and World psychologists for many years to come. I will dedicate in mouning my English translation of a short poem "haiku", compsed by ancient master Basho in memory of his close company. I first translated it for Dr. Harold Stevenson who was an enthusiastic friend of both Professor Jing and myself.
Move, You grave mound, As I cry in the hissing sound Of the Autumn wind.

Hiroshi Azuma(Professor Jing's colleague in the executive board
of IUPsyS Past President of Japanese Psychological Association)

It is with great sadness that I learned of the passing away of Prof. Qicheng Jing. I met Prof. Jing at an IUPsyS meeting many years ago and had been good friends since then. His contribution to international psychology is immense and, especially, bringing Chinese psychology to the rest of the world. Prof. Jing’s untimely departure is a great loss to us.

——————Norbert Tanzer

It is with much sadness that we hear of the passing away of Prof Jing. But it is with great fondness that we recall his pleasant demeanour that was always urbane, knowledgeable, wise and personable. His loss is shared around the world with a pride that he contributed so much to all of us. My daughter Oneida (who he met on 13 April this year) and son Athisten (who he met in July 2000) are especially sorrowful and wish me to express their sterling memories of being with someone like him. Know that his loss to you is a gain in remembrance for the rest of us.
   Strength and sincere condolences
